"Indian marriages are arranged in heaven", would be a more apt saying. In this arrangment process, it is said that two people marry not only themselves but two families get married to each other. Therefore you will see that most Indian parents still play a big role in finding a bride or a groom for their children.
The ceremonies can be elaborate stretching into a few days or some would last barely half-hour. Each community and many of their sub-communities have their own 'reeti-rivaz' (rituals). The simple to the elaborate, elegant to the gaudy, quiet and sober to the loud and colourful; Indians are getting married in more than a 1000 ways and counting!
